Try-out classes
One class for somebody who has never danced with you, covering price, refund, what can be tried, which week, joining afterwards, holding their seat, how often and how many per class.
For owners and managers
A try-out is one class for somebody who has never danced with you. It's free or cheap, and it's meant to turn into an enrolment. For example: "Try week one of any beginners block for €10; if you enrol within 7 days, the €10 comes off the block."
Where: sidebar → Try-out classes.
Who: owners and managers. Changes wait for Save changes.
The card What a newcomer sees on the right reads your choices back as the offer a newcomer will get. Check it before saving.
Who counts as new#
Somebody with no booking and no course seat at your school. In detail:
- A booking or enrolment they cancelled doesn't count, so they're still new.
- A try-out itself doesn't make them "not new". Whether they can have another try-out is decided by How often somebody may try below.
- Anyone who has actually booked a class, or holds a course seat, can't take a try-out.
Offer a try-out class#
The school-wide switch. Off by default: nothing appears anywhere until you turn it on.
What it costs#
- Give the first class away (default): nothing to pay, nothing to refund.
- Charge for it: set a Try-out price (€). A small price filters out the merely curious.
With a price set, two more choices appear:
- Refund a cancelled try-out (off by default). With it on, a newcomer who cancels within your usual class cancellation window gets their money back (see Cancellations). With it off, the app tells them plainly that a try-out isn't refunded.
- Counts toward the block (on by default, courses only). If they enrol in the same block they tried, the try-out price comes off the block price. It applies once, and only to that block.
What can be tried#
| Choice | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Courses (default) | A week of a block, so they meet the group they'd join. |
| Open classes | A single evening, no block to commit to. |
| Both | Whichever they find first. |
With open classes included, classes and workshops can be tried, but never an event. To keep a class out, choose No try-outs here on that class.
Which week they may try#
For courses only.
- The first week only (default): they start with everybody else.
- Any week: they can drop into a block that's already running.
Which blocks are on offer#
For courses only.
- Every block that fits (default): every published block that fits the rules above, including ones you add later.
- Only the blocks I tick: you choose each block yourself, with Offer a try-out on this block in the course editor. Blocks already on offer stay on offer when you switch.
You can tick or untick a block at any time, including after it's published.
Joining afterwards#
Enrolment in a block normally closes when it starts, and a week-one try-out is that moment. Days to decide gives the newcomer a private window to enrol after their try-out, even once enrolment has closed for everyone else.
- None, 7d, 14d (default), 30d, or Custom (0–120 days), counted from their try-out class.
- None means the try-out is a taster only. Enrolment closes on them with everybody else.
- A change applies to everyone straight away, including newcomers who are still deciding. Cut it from 14 days to 3 and somebody who tried 5 days ago can no longer join.
The help line tells you roughly which week of a weekly block that is. Joining late costs the full block price; there's no automatic discount for weeks already gone.
While they decide#
- Hold their seat while they decide (default): the seat is off the market during their window and goes back on sale by itself if they don't enrol.
- Leave it on sale: the block keeps selling. They may come back to enrol and find it full.
Each course can follow this, or choose differently, under While they decide whether to join in the course editor.
Be aware of the trade-off. With many try-outs allowed per class and seats held, a busy week one can reserve the whole block until those holds lapse. With seats left on sale, someone who loved their try-out can come back to a full block. You can still add them by hand from the block's people page, which raises the cap.
How often somebody may try#
| Choice | Meaning |
|---|---|
| One per style (default) | Trying bachata doesn't use up their salsa try-out. |
| One per person | One try-out here, ever. The tightest. |
| One per course | The most generous: a new block is a new chance. |
A try-out the newcomer cancels themselves still counts as used. It doesn't count if they abandoned the checkout before paying, or if your school cancelled the class: then it's handed back, and paid try-outs are refunded.
How many in one class#
None, 1, 2, 3, 4, Unlimited (default) or Custom (0–50): the most newcomers on a try-out in any one class.
- Unlimited means as many as the class holds. The class's own cap still applies, per role: a class of 12 a side takes at most 12 new leads and 12 new follows, and nobody who's paid for a seat loses it.
- None (0) closes every class to try-outs while the offer stays on. Usually that isn't what you want.
